A FROZEN 4th Birthday {Molly's Party}

Her love of FROZEN pales only in comparison to her overall love of her birthday!   And so a FROZEN 4th birthday party was a match made in Heaven for our four year old charmer.

I wasn't smart like the rest of the Frozen party planners all over Pinterest in that I failed to realize that after-clearance Christmas merchandise was perfect Frozen party decor.  So we had to make do with what I was able to get my hands on during a time of year when the store aisles are filled with flowers and gardening supplies!

I ended up using lots of glass containers, pillow batting, deco-mesh ribbon, styrofoam balls and trees, white lights, and multiple pounds of Epsom salts to create an icy, Frozen winter table scape for the party guests.

Glass icicles and silver glitter snow flakes hung from the ceiling.

It is nearly impossible to find Frozen toys in the stores these days, so I ended up borrowing these small little figurines from a friend to add to the table display.  Her kids lost Olaf and Sven so the Frozen animal population was missing :)

The centerpiece of the table included two "snow-filled" hurricanes with white and silver branches with more glass icicles hanging from the branches.

When Molly saw the table all decorated, her reaction was was so sweet.  She simply said "Wooow!"  And my sweet Noah said, "this is the best party you have ever done."  So I will call it a Frozen success!

To work with the short attention spans of four year olds, I only planned a few frozen inspired games and activities for the girls.

We started by making Ice Bracelets...

Next up was making crystalized snowflakes by painting with Epsom salts.  The "magic" of this craft happens after it dries when the salts crystalize on the paper!

Next up was an ice block stacking contest inspired by Kristoff's ice business.  The girls loved this; despite their chilly fingers and falling ice towers!

Finally, the highlight of the activities was planned by Molly herself... Frozen Faces!  After having their faces painted at Emily's birthday party, Molly immediately began talking about having face painting at her party too!  And so, one by one, the party girls were transformed into Frozen Faces!

We served a simple lunch inspired by Olaf and his frozen friends.

The younger party guests were served snowman PB&J sandwiches while the adults enjoyed sandwich wraps.

After lunch, it was time for the cake!  I surprised Molly by hunting down this Elsa doll (at a completely inflated price tag thanks to Disney's supply and demand genius) to put on the top of her cake.  The rock candy was supposed to look like her ice castle, but I realize I got the size proportions slightly mixed up :)

Happy Birthday to you...

We made "goody jars" instead of "goody bags"!  I used sugar for a snowy base and filled the jars with gumballs, candy canes, and rock candy to resemble the Frozen landscape.  Inside were a few plastic Frozen rings and a rainbow loom bracelet with an Anna & Elsa bottlecap tie.  On the outside, they were tied with an Elsa necklace and some glittery ribbon.  They turned out pretty sweet!

And last but not least, each little party guest had a pair of "magic" Elsa gloves tied to the back of their chair.

A Frozen party wouldn't be complete without a performance of "Let It Go" in which the girls used their "magic" gloves to imitate Elsa's freezing powers!

All in all, it was a day of Frozen-filled fun and the four year old "Ice Queen" was super happy!

Happy 4th Birthday sweet Molly Clare!

We love you more than Olaf loves warm hugs :)

Determined...

Yes...

I was determined to catch up on all my drafts that have been haunting me since pregnancyinabilitytodoanything set in in early Fall.

I think I'm coming out of it...

Probably just in time for it to set in again... this time because the i'mgettingsobigican'tmove stage is encroaching!

At any rate, I'm done with the late and outdated posts... for a while!

Overheard

{Literal Answer by Molly}
As we were driving home from a basketball game the other day, PaPa was asking Molly what color different things were.  She answered them all correctly.  The end of the conversation went like this:

PaPa:  What color is Nonny's car?
Molly:  Blue
PaPa:  What color is PaPa's hair?
Molly:  Grey
PaPa:  What color is Molly's hair?
Molly:  Gorgeous!

After a good laugh, Molly responded to PaPa by saying...
"Well that's what Mommy tells me!"

Indeed, it is!

{Sweet Response by Molly}
During gymnastics "role call", the teacher always asks the little girls about one of their favorite things.  Today, she asked them what their favorite song was.  One little girl responded "Lady Gaga", another responded "Rupunzel", and another responded "Katy Perry."  When it was Molly's turn, she sweetly said...

"I just like to sing Jesus Loves Me."

{Mimic by Abby}
Abby was complaining of her tummy hurting this morning.  So I repeated back to her, saying...

"Abby, your tummy hurts?"

Her response..

"Ya!  I have baby in my tummy!"

Wonder where she hears that ALL the time?!?!

{Terminology Mix Up by Molly}

Molly will do just about anything to sleep in my bed with me at night.  Her "I'm sick" performances are getting fairly Oscar - worthy!  But the other night, she was truly scared by a bad dream and needed the comfort of her mama.  When she snuggled next to me, still shaking from fear, she described what had happened...

"Mommy, when I close my eyes in my bed, I have scary wishes!"

{posted extremely late... I've been working on it since Christmas!}

*****
Overall, I felt like quite the "mom failure" this Christmas/Advent season.  I was in the height of my 1st trimester woes; feeling constantly nauseous with little to no energy... ever.  Most of my free time had to be dedicated to extra sleep... out of pure necessity and survival.  We ate fast food nearly every night and overall, things just generally were not normal in our household.  It was one of "those" seasons of life.  The ones that push me to my limits of sanity and challenge me to look beyond myself.

Despite being in one of those challenging life stages, we still managed to celebrate the season.  And hopefully we focused on the true reason for the celebration.  It was far from ideal, but as I look through the pictures, I am reminded to focus on the things we DID do rather than lament the things that didn't occur.  Years from now, the kids won't remember how useless and out of sorts I was during the Christmas of 2013... they will just look at these pictures and see that we celebrated a season of our life in the best way that we could.

So with having far fewer pictures than I normally would, here are a few highlights from the Christmas season in our home.

{Enjoying the Celebrations}

Perhaps the most special part of this Christmas season was being able to celebrate it with my grandparents; the kids' great grandparents.  My sweet and amazing Granny had to move into a full care facility this Fall due to her progressing Alzheimer's Disease.  Her visit for Christmas was the first time she was able to leave the care home since she had to officially take residence.  My Grandpa was so happy to be able to bring her to Wichita.  It was bittersweet as we knew it would likely be the last time she was able to be with us in our own home surroundings for a holiday.  My grandparents have been a constant part of my life and have been a part of every major event or celebration in my life.  So the thought of them not being able to do that any longer is heartbreaking.  And although the disease resides with my Granny's brain alone, it has affected my Grandpa's just the same. So in the midst of this tough season of their lives, I am so grateful that they were able to enjoy some special time with our family and enjoy the normalcy and excitement that being around 5 small kids at Christmastime brings.  And I'm even more grateful for these special memories that I hope my own kids will one day cherish!
